Independence Day
The 4th of July is Independence Day in the United States. Families get together and have picnics and cookouts. Cookouts are also called barbecues. They make hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. They eat macaroni or potato salad, baked beans and chips. They drink iced tea, lemonade and sodas. After everyone eats, the children usually play games. Sometimes they play softball or kickball. They soon become hungry again. There is always a lot of food. There are plenty of things to eat. The desserts are usually apple pie, cherry pie and a Jell-O dessert that is red, white and blue.Most of the children like to eat the apple or the cherry pie with vanilla ice cream on the top. Those are the colors of the flag. They also have watermelon. The watermelon can be messy so there are plenty of napkins. Once the sun starts to go down, the kids get excited because the fireworks will start when it is dark. Fireworks are bright lights, like stars in the sky. They are colorful and loud. They can scare small children. Generally, fireworks are fired from boats that are sitting in the water in a lake or in a river, so that they cannot cause any damage to private property or start an undesired fire.
